Lots of problems with your example. While they may well settle for 50% they won't mark it paid in full. It'll read paid/settled. It'll be a long time before you get a credit line of $10K with that desgination on your report.
Also, before MBNA or any other creditor will settle such a large debt they'll do an asset search. If they find you have any property or a great job or, live in a community property state, they'll sue you before they settle.
