As far as i understand it, the garnishment is taken out of your wages before it is automatically deposited into your account. The bank would have to be served seperately in order for it to take all the money from your account and hand it over to the creditor. However, you most likely will not find out about this until after the fact. Also, you can appeal the garnishment to the courts, at least I could and did this stating it would be a financial hardship and I got the creditor to agree to a payment plan for much less than what they would have garnished.

I never got the garnishment papers, but when my employer received the paper, I asked for a copy and they gave me one and on that was info about appealing it.
