I can speak from experience. I had been in default on two student loans totaling $8,200. I was in default for close to 5 years and was worried what was in store for me now. Out of the blue, a CA contacted me with a letter saying they needed payment now. I called and was told that if I made 6 months of payments to the CA, I could then have the loans combined and would be making payments to Southwest Student Services Corporation.

I made the payments and signed the info that was sent me to combine the 2 loans into one. I have been making steady payments ever since. I did not see a deduction in my student loan amount from the money that I sent the CA. This concerned me, but I think I read where the CA can collect a certain amount for handling the student loan.

Hope my experience helps you out.
