What a day I'm having! I hope someone can offer some advice or suggestions on what to do. I left work early, courtesy of a migraine, and as I was coming up the stairs to my apartment, two sheriff's deputies started walking up the stairs as well. Turns out they were coming to my apartment to serve me with a Writ of Fieri Facias. They explained that they had to come into my apartment and survey my property. I live with my mother, and own nothing (the apartment is hers). They told me that they would write down that I own nothing of value and return it to the party in question suing me.

Here's the insane thing. I have no clue what this debt is for! I asked them how I could receive a judgement against me, without legal proof of a court date served to me. They said that a warrant in debt was probably issued beforehand, but that it only has to be put on my door (in which case it could blow away, etc.). The debt is for almost $6,000. I have NEVER had any debt like that whatsoever (I went through a messy divorce and my husband ruined my credit years ago). I've never even had an unsecured credit card! The company is Landmark National Corporation, but I can't find any information out on them at all, so I don't know if they are a credit card company or what. I've contacted the attorney listed, but he hasn't called me back.
I'm in Virginia. Does anyone know if this is legal? The sheriff was very nice, but explained that the next step would be to garnish my wages! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
