Process for validation??

Would someone be so kind as to walk me through the process of validation? I have two semi-large charge-offs on my credit report that belonged to my ex-husband (these are from approximately the beginning of 2000). I am an AU only and do not ever remember giving consent to place me on these accounts, but since Wisconsin is a marital property state, am assuming I didn't have a choice. I have never received any attempt to collect on these debts since before my divorce (probably because they are in my ex's name). Should I validate with the OC first and then try the CRA? It doesn't look as if the OC has sent them to a CA but it's been a few years since any activity. Should I just send a dispute to the CRA indicating that I'm an AU only and these belonged to the primary user? I tried it once a year ago and the CRA came back as verified so I put it on hold until I could do more research. Can you validate with a OC? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Em
