Letter from Law Offices

I just received a letter from a law firm regarding my Providian credit card. I think my balance was around $1400, when I stopped making payments on it over a year ago. They are telling me my balance is now $2387. I don't want any judgments against me, but I don't want to pay $1000 more than my balance was. What should be my next step? HELP!!
