Debit cards usually have limits for WITHDRAWING from an ATM, but for "visa" transactions its usually only based on available funds.

However, if you travel on business you'll have BIG trouble with car rental companies. They will NOT accept debit cards to rent a car, at least the 'big ones' won't. You should call the ones you typically would use to find out. Now, you can pay the bill when you drop off the car with a debit card, but you can't use it to pick one up. Its a huge pain in the keester, to say the least.
