12 year-old debt collection???

My husband just got a summons in the mail TODAY--from a finance co. that he bought a car from while he was in the Navy in Florida in **1991**. We are in Ohio. He says the car died 2 months after he bought it and he brought it back and the contract was negated. Now this company is suing him for $3300+. Not once in 12 years did they contact him about this, nor does he feel he owes anything. Is there reason for concern? Should we get a lawyer? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks...
