Correct dates for deletion?

I have a collection acct. which on experian says due to be off 3/2004 which makes me believe it passed the sol which is 6 yrs in NY. I also have a tri- merge report from 1998 which states last open 2/97 and also states 4/97=120 and maximum delinq.=5/96. Shouldn't this be the day the 7yr period for deletion starts? And how do i know the real date in which it would start. From the 3 reports i did recently, experian seems to be the most accurate.
