Do you have proof of where you lived at the time they claim you rented this apartment ?? An old tax return perhaps, electric bill or phone bill ?
A similar name is hardly validation. Did they have a ssn ? I'm guessing not since they asked for that. Did they tell you who the original landlord/creditor is ?? Have you tried to contact them yourself ??

Write them a letter and dispute that this is NOT your debt and that you have NEVER lived at the address they claim you owe the debt for. Its up to THEM to prove its YOU that owes the debt and a name match simply doesn't cut it.

Check your credit report for this collection. Dispute it with the credit bureaus as 'not mine'. The CRA's will likely ask you for proof of an address other than what's claimed.
