pay or not?

My debt is for 5500.00. the debts last activity was 03/97. sol is out. (i live in chicago, il). so it should disapear in about a year. im worried about a job or a loan over 150k checking my credit once the 7 years are up. i have plenty of money to throw at the problem now but i dont want to "restart the clock". they said they would settle for half of the bill. (2500). should i pay this so that this debt shows as "paid" to future employers and creditors or is it already a bad mark that i should just leave alone. Is there a letter the CA or OC can send me to ensure they wont restart the debt or try to collect the remaining ballance. thanks alot!!
