I'm in California, in debt over 100K (business gone bad), and have been unemployed for months. Most of my payments stopped in 9/2002. Long story... anyway, today a "Law Offices of..." called and I talked to the guy handling my account. I asked him if he was a lawyer and he said no (BTW I checked on the Internet and these guys are "collection attorneys"). He works for attorneys who own the company, I guess. He said he sent something out in the mail that I would be getting and said something like, "these attorneys are really lazy in their paperwork" which I didn't understand. He was extremely nice. How odd. After asking if I owned a house (I don't) and how much I owed, he suggested I file for BK. He even gave me a company to contact - We The People. He went on to say they would file a lawsuit even though I take the BK route. What about if I have next to nothing in assets? My question is, is it strange for a collection agent to suggest BK and be so nice and cordial about it? Is he up to something? Is he playing me for a fool? I feel like one. I'm ready to put a bullet in my head...
