Please disregard Byron's post. He isn't reading too clearly today, nor are his facts correct.

You haven't described which letter you sent the collection agency, but I assume you requested validation of the debt. There is nothing in the FDCPA that requires them to validate within a specified time period. They are, however, prevented from attempting to collect UNTIL they validate. This does not prevent them from filing suit, however they would need to prove the debt was your's in court. With luck, they don't have the materials required and you've run them off, but watch your mail, phone + credit reports carefully for illegal collection activity.

Also, nothing prevents them from selling this debt to another CA and starting the process over, but you should be equiped to handle it.

$7000 is a lot of money and I'd guess you'll hear about it again.
